I became so interested in diving activity after diving at Great Barrier Reef, Australia. The Philippines is also a country which has a lot of marine resources. I already decided to get the diving license before I arrived in Cebu.
There are many world-wide diving authorities, such as PADI, NAUI, SSI, CMAS, ADS, SEA, and so on. My friends at CIA Language School and I attained SEA Open Water Course in a diving shop named Fun&Sun which is located on Mactan Island. The price of this 2-days course is 8000 pesos.
We only watched the introduction video in the shop in the first morning. To be honest, I couldn’t focus on it because I was eager to get into water too much.
In the afternoon, the instructors guided us to be familiar with the diving gears. They taught us how to set up the gears and told us the function of each part. After they made sure every student understood thoroughly, we started to carry on our gears and get into the water.
We stayed in a 5-meters deep area at first. The instructors let us familiarize the gears in the water. And then, they guided us to practice the basic diving skills, such as equalizing, finding the regulator if accidentally removed, relieving the air from BCD, cleaning the water in the mask, and so on. These skills seem easy, but they are the most essential knowledge divers need. Therefore, the instructors asked us to practice again and again.
The next morning, we got into the water again after the instructors guided us to review what we learned the day before. We stayed in shallow area to practice the basic skills at first. After that, we dived into deeper area. Equalizing becomes more important since the depth was increasing. Many divers stop diving all because they can’t perform equalizing well. Another emphasis of the second day’s lesson was practicing kick and balance. Dives must have correct skills of kick and balance in order to reduce the consumptions of energy and air while diving, thus, we can enjoy underwater world easily.
Although it was not my first experience to go diving, I still felt a little nervous. However, the feeling of excitement was stronger than nervousness. As long as we are familiar with the diving skills and follow instructors, I believe I can enjoy every dive safely.
After 3 months, I went to Malapascua and got the PADI Advance Open Water License. (Divers can use SEA license to apply PADI course.) I will share more information about it later.
