為什麼要來菲律賓讀英文?
一年多前我到澳洲打工度假，從其他台灣背包客口中得知可以到菲律賓學英文，聽到的當下非常震驚，才知道除了美加澳紐等，菲律賓也是一個學英文的管道，從那時候才開始搜尋相關資訊。
Why study English in the Philippines?
About one year ago, I went to Australia for working holidays and heard from another Taiwanese backpacker that people can study English in the Philippines. I was so shocked and started to gather the information at that time.

菲律賓全國七千多個大大小小島嶼，每個地區都有不同的當地語言，他們的第一官方語言是Tagalog，第二官方語言便是英文，菲律賓的學生從小學就開始學英文，多數的課程老師都是用英文授課，老實說不是每個菲律賓人都講了一口流利標準的英文，但是絕大多數都能用基本的英文和外國人溝通，師資來源豐富加上比較便宜的工資，所以越來越多的語言學校在菲律賓開設。
There are more than 7000 islands in the Philippines; every area has its own local language. Their first official language is Tagalog and second one is English. The students in the Philippines start to study English since elementary school, and most of subjects are taught in English. Honestly, not every Pilipino can speak English fluently, but most of them can communicate with foreigner through basic English. Because of rich source of teachers and cheaper labor, more and more language academies were opened here.

學費是貴還是便宜?
我想學費是貴還是便宜取決於個人的預算，如果有足夠的預算大家應該都想到純英語系國家學英文。以我本身為例，出國遊學是我從國中開始的夢想，但是家庭經濟的關係始終無法支持我。2010年年底，我到澳洲打工度假九個月存了一點錢，但是那筆錢無法讓我長時間就讀於澳洲，我想英文差的我不可能一兩個月就能把英文念好，所以最後選擇了來菲律賓，用有限的預算延長我專心就讀英文的時間，當初念了五個月。
Is tuition fee expensive or cheap?
I think the answer depends on individual budget. Most of people prefer to study in English-speaking countries if they have enough money. Studying abroad, for example, was my dream since junior high school. However, my family couldn’t support me because of financial status. I saved some money when I was in my working-holidays in Australia, but that money was not enough for me to study there for a long time. As a person who has poor English skills, I thought it was impossible to improve my English just in one or two months. Eventually, I used my limited budget to study in the Philippines for a longer time. I studied here for 5 months at that time.

自辦還是找代辦?
現在網路上的資訊非常發達，想要自辦語言學校不是不可能，大家想自辦無非是想節省預算。但是我們必須思考網路上資訊是否都正確，畢竟來讀書不是像來度假一兩個禮拜就走人，真的要慎選適合自己的學校與課程。一間好的代辦機構，會針對學生的需求從形形色色的選擇中推薦適合個人的學校，在學生出發前幫助學生做好行前準備，就讀期間成為學生與學校溝通的橋梁。當然這些代辦機構不是慈善事業，會從學費中跟學校收取佣金，我想不只是菲律賓，找代辦到每個國家遊留學都是這個模式，重點是你所選擇的代辦是否能盡責，大家真的要睜大眼睛選擇有口碑的業者。
Should you consult an agency?
There is a lot of information of studying abroad on the internet, thus, it’s not impossible to enroll an academy by oneself. The reason, for sure, is saving money. But we have to think thoroughly that if the information from the internet is all correct. After all, studying is unlike traveling; we won’t stay in a place just for couple weeks. So I should choose a school and curriculum that is suitable for us. Good agencies will assist students to choose a school from various options according to student’s requirements. They help student prepare before departure and maintain good affiliation with schools when student are studying abroad. Of course these agencies are not charity group; they receive commission from schools. In my view, it’s a common procedure if people study abroad in every country through agencies. The most important thing is choosing a responsible agency. Everyone should consult an agency which has good reputation.

菲律賓語言學校特色?
菲律賓的語言學校有分不同種類，有些是半度假式的學習，有的是密集式的授課，學生可以針對自己的需求做選擇。基本上來說，多數的學校都有提供1:1的課程，我想這是菲律賓語言學校最大的特色。大部分的台灣學生都有相當的英文基礎，想要到國外加強自己的口說能力，在一對一的課程中，老師就專屬你一個人，有絕佳的機會練習口語。
What is the feature of the academy in the Philippines?
There are many kinds of language schools in the Philippines; some provide holiday-study schedule and some provide intensive classes. Students can make different choices depend on their interest. Basically, most of the schools here provide one-on-one classes. Most of Taiwanese have basic English skills, and we want to enhance our speaking skill when we study abroad. During the one-on-one classes, a teacher is provided to a single student, so we can have good opportunity to practice our speaking and other skills.

老師水平參差不平?
因為這裡的學校有許多1:1的課程，所以需要雇用許多老師來支應學生的需求，部分學校難免會雇到無心教學的老師，但是許多學校都有每周讓學生換老師的政策，如果一間想要永續經營的學院，遇到一個常被學生抱怨或撤換的老師，學校自然會淘汰這種老師。重點是你所選擇的學校是否能夠滿足你就讀的需求。
Isn’t the teaching quality stable?
Like I mentioned before, schools have to hire many teachers to accommodate their one-on-one classes. Inevitably, schools may hire few teachers who can’t dedicate themselves in teaching. However, most schools have change-class policy; students can change their teacher every week. For a school which wants to have a good reputation, for sure, it will fire the teachers who always being changed or complained by students. The point is if the academy you choose can satisfy your requirements.

老師的英文有腔調?
不諱言的，英文不是菲律賓的唯一官方語言，不是說每個老師都能說一口標準的美式口音，而且我覺得想要練就一口標準的美式口音不是一兩個月就能達到的，在短時間的進修期間，有信心開口講英文還是最重要的，畢竟美式口音不是全世界唯一的英文口音。
Accent problem?
English is not the first language in the Philippines. I have to say that not every teacher can speak in perfect American accent.However, it’s impossible to have perfect accent in one or two months.In short-term studying, I think, the most important thing is gaining confident to speak English , but not having a perfect accent. After all, the American accent is not the only one around the world.

菲律賓民情與治安?
菲律賓形容他們自己的天性為樂天，看在其他民族眼裡也許是懶散。不同的歷史、文化、環境、氣候、經濟等等都影響一個民族的特性，我們只是過客，我覺得不需要干預他們怎麼過生活。貧富差距盛大，城市人口過盛，這是我在宿霧看到的情形，治安來說真的比台灣差，所以我們必須不斷地提醒學生出門在外該注意的事項，並告知他們什麼地方危險不要去。我在這裡前前後後七個多月並沒有什麼不好的事情發生在我身上。
Their characteristic and public order?
Filipino describe themselves as cheerful and optimistic person, however, other race may think they are lazy. Different history, culture, environment or climate can affect one race’s characteristic. In my opinion, we are just visitors here and we don’t need to interfere the way they live.The gap between rich and poor is big; over population in cities, these are what I see in Cebu. The public order is really worse than Taiwan, so we have to keep reminding students what they should be aware when they go out and telling them where they shouldn’t go. I have been here for 7 months and nothing bad happened to me.

除了宿霧還能去哪裡?
馬尼拉、宿霧、怡朗、碧瑤、克拉克、蘇比克、巴拉望、巴克羅等地都有語言學校可供選擇。除了宿霧外，我只能去過巴拉望旅遊，所以不能對其他地區提供意見。以我熟悉的宿霧來說，這裡是菲律賓的第二大城，沒有馬尼拉來得繁榮，但是生活機能也經很方便了，周邊也有許多美麗的小島直得去旅遊，所以宿霧適合不想在鄉下地方待太久，放假又想去遊玩的學生來這裡讀書。
Aside from Cebu, where can students study?
There are English academies in Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, Baguio, Clark, Subic, Palawan and Bacolod. Aside from Cebu, I have only been to Palawan for traveling, so I can’t provide any information about other areas. For Cebu, it’s the second biggest city in the Philippines. It isn’t as prosperous as Manila, but it’s already convenient to stay here. There are many beautiful islands around Cebu Island which are worth to visit. So Cebu is a place suitable for students who don’t want to stay in countryside areas for a long time and like traveling during weekends.
